Title: AI Engine Design for Human-Robot Interaction

Lead-Instructor (Remote):– Xiangxu Lin (ATR lab researcher, Computer Science, Kent State University)

Co-Instructor (In-person):- Nafiul Alarm (ATR lab researcher, Computer Science, Kent State University)

Abstract: Generative AI has become a key area of focus in recent years, but its potential extends far beyond simple text generation. In this workshop, we will explore how AI agents can serve as the central cognitive engine to power robotic systems, enabling robots to perform tasks independently and autonomously while still collaborating seamlessly with human operators. We’ll begin with an in-depth exploration of what generative AI is and how it functions. From there, we will dive deeper into AI-to-AI communication and examine how humans can remain actively involved in the process, working alongside AI to achieve shared objectives. Key topics will include proactive AI behaviors, building trust in human-robot collaboration, and finding the right balance between robot autonomy and human oversight. The session will also feature a live demonstration showcasing how an AI engine can drive robotic actions within a simulated environment. Participants will then engage in a hands-on tutorial, learning to build a basic AI engine that can simulate similar robotic interactions. Whether you’re new to AI or already familiar with its foundations, this workshop will provide you with the practical knowledge and tools to explore the next frontier in AI-powered robotics.
